MV DAD Program Ideas

Summary

Collaboration and Balance are Key
  • Consider these areas on a whole: Print, Interactive, Animation, and Game. Could also work with Advertising and Marketing areas.
  • Design VS Training
Digital Art and Design Program
Need balance between creative, business, and technical aspects of Graphic Communication / Arts.

  • Remove the word "computer" and change to "digital" - as technologies go more mobile so should we!
  • Classes
    • Drawing: remove traditional drawing - add one digital drawing class (imaging or vector drawing)
    • Photo: remove Traditional Photography - add digital photography,
    • Graphic Design - add
    • Graphic Design Practicum (instead of Advanced Computer Art)
    • Typography - add
    • Possible package design course instead of 3D design (would need studio with work space and ventillation)
    • History: Add a design / new media history / appreciation.
    • Business of art / portfolio development, or Freelance Principles and Practice - replace Internship with this course. Teach portfolio, business practice, proposals and contracts, etc. Maybe need two classes for these?
  • Need larger studio to facilitate proper growth - F160 would be a perfect DAD learning studio. Proximatity to other art programs, increased visibility, more space, darkroom, etc.

Option 1: Art & Technology

Where creativity and technology converge.
This allows for more collaboration and integration between Art and Tech departments - Digital Art, CGI, and even OSA.
AFA - Digital Art or Graphic Arts
  • Digital Art might transfer more easily to 4 year schools? Something to look into.
  • Would be built in a way that students could take some ART core courses and then finish off with DART classes which would include a CGI courses (2D animation is the most relevant). And a Business of Art and Marketing or Advertising class.
AFA - Fine Arts
  • Require Digital Art & Design Course (perhaps new Digital Drawing, Digital Photo, and Intro to Computer Art). And Business of Art class.
  • Have core required courses for both Digital Art and Fine Art then branch off into specialty.
AAS and Certificate - Graphic Design
  • AAS Graphic Design (current DAD program altered to meet current trends)
  • Graphic Designer Certificate
(current Digital Designer Certificate altered to meet current trends)
AAS - Computer Graphics Imagery (CGI)
  • Change name to align with industry standard language (Computer-Generated Imagery)
  • Focus on animation. Remove / Replace the two Computer Graphics classes with ART courses as part of the curriculum including ART 101, ART 116 or ART 118, or ART 146.
  • Three Certificates that stack to AAS CGI degree:
    1. 2D Animation
    2. 3D Animation
    3. Game Design
  • Change the Orientation course to a Digital Art / Graphic Design / CGI careers combo class to help streamline the process to place students into the correct programs. This course could be co-taugt with instructors from both areas.

Option 2: Art & Design

AFA - Fine Arts
  • Require Digital Art & Design Course (perhaps new Digital Drawing, Digital Photo, and Intro to Computer Art). And Business of Art class.
  • Have core required courses for both Digital Art and Fine Art then branch off into specialty.
AFA - Art and Design (aka: Digital Art & Design or Graphic Communication)
  • Remove all traditional drawing courses from this degree. Instead build a Digital Drawing course (Graphic Designers do not need to know how to draw traditionally.)
Certificates
The idea with the certificates would be to offer them as Summer Certificates. Offer 3 back-to-back summer classes - one in the 3 week intersession, one in the first 4 weeks, and one in the second 4 weeks of summer.
Certificate - Graphic Design
Edited Digital Designer Certificate into two degrees:
  1. Digital (web / interactive
  2. Print (layout and image making)
Certificate - Digital Image Specialist
  • Digital Imaging (drawing)
  • Digital Illustration
  • Digital Photography
Certificate - Photography Specialist
Tyler and I spoke and he would be interested in pursuing this as an option.
  • Photography: Dark Room
  • Photography: Digital
  • Photography: Portraiture, or Event Photography, or?
